Problems With the Exhaust System

You will likely know if your automobile is having problems with the exhaust system. We are going to list the signs of exhaust system problems below so you know what to look for in your automobile. It is important to have the exhaust system repaired as soon as possible if it is damaged. This ensures the safe and reliable flow of the exhaust through the system and out of the tailpipe.

Exhaust Fumes

A leaking or clogged exhaust system can introduce exhaust fumes into the passenger cabin. This makes driving your automobile very dangerous because you should never inhale exhaust fumes. Even if you can’t smell the exhaust, if driving your vehicle makes you sick, you likely have some exhaust in the cabin.

Extra Noise

A problem with the muffler is going to cause extra noise that everyone can hear. Unfortunately, if the muffler is damaged, it may not be able to muffle the exhaust system noise. Consequently, your vehicle will roar like a race car. A stolen catalytic converter can also cause a noise problem.

Rotten Performance

If the exhaust system is leaking or clogged, you may end up with exhaust building up inside the combustion chamber. When this happens, your vehicle’s performance is severely affected. As such, you will notice that your engine struggles to produce power, especially when you press down on the accelerator.

Excess Fuel Consumption

As if that weren’t bad enough, your automobile is also going to turn into a fuel hog. This means it will use excess fuel while it struggles to produce power. This can make things extremely difficult if you are living on a tight budget and cannot afford to fill your tank more often than you normally do.

Leaking Manifold

Another problem that can occur in the exhaust system is a leaking exhaust manifold or manifold gasket. When this happens, the exhaust leaks into the engine and causes the performance problems discussed above. You may also hear popping or tapping coming from the engine if you have this type of leak.

Damaged Tailpipe

Finally, your tailpipe can get damaged over time because it deals with a lot of abuse. Not only does it get pelted by road debris, but it can also make contact with the road if you drive over speed bumps or other road hazards too fast. A damaged tailpipe should be replaced right away.
